July in Tacoma 2021

July is here and we've found a number of things to do in Tacoma! Get re-acquainted with Tacoma's dining scene, put those running shoes to use, catch an airshow for the 4th, shop local and outdoors, or celebrate Pride in Tacoma style. Looking for something to do with the kids? Get the family together for an outdoor movie night or get your little dancer signed up for a dance camp they'll never forget (pssst, we heard Elsa might be swinging by). We are excited to watch this city open up more and more!

See you around, Tacoma!

July 3rd

It seemed bleak for Tacoma’s famous teapot, but thanks to the love and support of the Tacoma community, our famous Bob's Java Jive will re-open this month. Come check out the improvements made at Bob's while enjoying some food, spirits, and of course... karaoke! We're so happy to see this Tacoma staple back up and running, who else can say they have a giant teapot bar in their town!? The Jive will open early at 3pm and is looking forward to seeing your smiling faces. Be sure to stick around for a special surprise too!

July 4th

Another holiday, another fun run! Tacoma City Marathon Association is proud to present another IN PERSON race. Starting at North 37th and Vassault and ending in the beautiful Point Ruston, this fast, flat, and downhill 5k is a great way to burn off those Independence Day hot dogs before your even eat 'em. Either have your friends and family pick you up at the finish line or take the convenient shuttle back to Vassault (runs until 10am!). Each finisher will receive a medal and race day t-shirt. Come celebrate with a nice morning run!

July 3rd & 4th

Unfortunately, this years Tacoma Freedom Fair is cancelled (**womp womp**). While this beloved tradition is on hold yet another year, the Freedom Fair organizers have come alongside our Gig Harbor neighbors and invite you to the Wings and Wheels Airshow! This event is designed so that your family can view the tricks, speed, and fun of military and civilian aircrafts from your own personal tailgating space. There will be two shows each day, all featuring an Air Force F-35 Lighting II demonstration, the 62nd AW West Coast C-17 Demonstration Team, Vicky Benzing Aerosports, and more! Tickets are sold per vehicle and you are invited to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Pssst... Looking for a place to view fireworks?

Check out this article from Travel Tacoma OR get your tickets to the upcoming July 3rd and 4th Rainers games!

It’s time for Tacoma Pride! Over the month of July, Tacoma’s Rainbow Center has set up a series of events around this Grit City to support and celebrate our LGBTQ residents. It all starts on July 9th with the raising of the pride flag over the Tacoma Dome and goes all month long! Throughout July you’ll find a myriad of events like drag shows, the Stride with Pride fun run, fun activities at The Mix, a lawn bowling tournament, and of course, the outdoor Pride Festival featuring local musicians, vendors, food, a beer garden, and a whole lot of pride! Also, be sure to check out the Points of Pride around Tacoma who are offering special promotions and activities in honor of pride. With this much to do, you’ll surely find a way to celebrate love all month!

July 9th - Movie in the Park

July 10th & 11th - Pride at the Zoo

July 15th - PRIDE pARTy at TAM

And MORE!

July 10th & 31st

Hilltop always has something new going on! Located in the Tacoma Arts Community Center on 11th and MLK, the Hilltop Indoor Market is bringing a fresh look, with fresh new local vendors every twice a month. That’s right! Two markets a month and a different theme each market. July is coming in hot with a Health & Wellness market on July 10th, follwed by their most popular market, Hempfest, on July 31st. Each market will run from 10am – 6pm and feature local makers who create anything from body butters, hair care products, and spiritual tools, to t-shirts, glass art, and cbd infused bathbombs (no marijuana or THC infused products, just FYI!). Follow the market on Instagram or Facebook for vendor updates, future events, and to see how the market is serving the Hilltop Community.

July 12th

The Tacoma History Museum is excited to announce their first in-person event in over year! Come join local writer Donald Tjossem as he dives into his most recent book, Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Learn about the history of our famous bridges, get a glimpse into the process of building such massive structures, hear the tail of Galloping Gertie, and see some of the faces behind the construction. The historical society staff will be so happy to see you!

Hungry?

If you aren't following Sue Kidd's Dine Pierce County on Instagram or Facebook, do yourself a favor and start right now! June 30th marks the "re-opening" of Washington State. Our friends in the service industry have certainly been put through the ringer this past year and we are excited to get back out there and show them some love. Thankfully, Sue Kidd has put together a list of *50* restaurants that opened during the pandemic. From high end steak houses, to authentic noodles bowls, to a nice pizza pie, the list is incredible. Need a new Taco Tuesday joint? There's a few! Dessert? Oh HECK YEAH. Check out Sue's latest post here.

July 15th

If you've read previous blogs from us, you've heard Catie rave over Splendor & Stone. Well guess what? She's doing it again! Gretchen of Splendor & Stone is hosting a market... in her own backyard! Not only will she feature her own beautiful creations, but creations and collections from local artists and businesses. Clothing, plants, jewelry, art, you name it! This one day market is sure to be full of treasure. Check out her Instagram for more details and updates.

July 24th

Pack up your blankets and popcorn because it's time for a movie night! The Grand Cinema in partnership with Salishan Association and the Tacoma Housing Authority are hosting a FREE outdoor movie night for the whole family. Featuring the 2018 animated hit, Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, this occasion is great for all ages. The movie starts at 9pm in Salishan's Family Investment Center Field, so be sure to arrive early for seating. Snacks will be provided and all are welcome!

Dance Camp

Have a kiddo that loves to dance? Check out Tacoma Urban Performing Arts Center's Dance Camp! This four week camp includes instruction in ballet, hip-hop, and/or West African dance, as well as other fun activities. Each week will focus on a different Disney movie and character, and includes games, crafts, outdoor activities and more! Rumor has it Elsa and a few of her friends may even be making an appearance. Lunch and snacks will be provided as well as scholarships for children on free and reduced lunch.
